Norman Dickson started racing in 1973, with a Special Saloon Hillman Imp. The following year saw him winning the Scottish Formula Ford Championship. During 1975 he won the Scottish Libre Championship in a March 752, and campaigned in a two-car Formula Atlantic team with Richard Scott, Both driving Modus M3s. In 1976 he won his class, with the Modus, in the Aurora AFX British Championship. A move back to a March, this time a 772, in 1977 saw him winning another Scottish Libre Championship. During the two following years he drove in the European F2, British F2 and British Aurora Championships. A new March 792 ground effect car was bought for 1979, in which he won the Scottish Libre Champion, won the Formula 2 class in the Aurora AFX British Championship and also set the outright lap record at Ingliston with a speed of 83.51mph.
