John Calvert had a long, international career before this picture was taken. During the sixties he had raced in European long distance sports car events - notably sharing a Ginetta G4R with Johnny Blades in the Nürbergring 1000km - and drove a variety of single seaters. Previous to '75, he had raced in F1300 with a twin-cam Royale, and Special saloons with a 1950cc engined Escort. The 742 was a Formula 2 car - note the side radiator, lower wing and serrated engine cover when comparing this car with the Formula Atlantic version, March 74B of Andy Barton. Hillcrest is still selling cars today, a few miles up the A19 from Croft.
