Argo JM1 X
Manufactured: 1979
Engine: Ford 1600cc
Configuration: mid-engine
Driver: Rick Gorne
Class: Formula Atlantic
Date taken: 1979 at Chicane, Croft
Rick started racing karts in 1975, then Formula Ford 1600 in 1976 before upgrading to Formula Ford 2000 in 1978, driving a Reynard SF78. His success (9 wins) in this formula prompted him to try Formula Atlantic in 1979 driving the Argo JM1 X shown above. A few weeks later, a crash at Ingliston stopped his racing career. He became Competition Director at the British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) for two years before starting a long association with Adrian Reynard’s, Reynard Racing Cars. In 1999, he became British America Racing’s (BAR) Commercial Director, moving on to Lola in 2002.

Barton JTB3
Engine: Barton 1975cc
Configuration: mid-engine
Driver: Andy Barton
Class: Formula Atlantic, Formula 2 and Libre over 1600cc
Date taken: March 1978 at Main Straight, Croft
The Barton was based on a Sana Chassis, which was lengthened and modified by Andy at his premises at Newburn, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. As always, the engine was a Barton prepared BDA. Andy later went on to offer the Barton JBT3 as a Formula Atlantic car with full technical and spare back-up. This was a development of the car raced in Libre events, driven by David Muter, and the Aurora F1 championship driven by Andy (despite the title, Formula 2 cars had their own class).
Often referred to as the King of Croft, Andy Barton made his name initially racing in one litre Minis but made the leap in performance when he started to race the ex-Fittipaldi Lotus 69 in Libre events. Previously, Andy had raced Morris 1000s, Mini 1000s, a range of March F2s and a Chevron F2.
