Sturgess Engine: Cosworth 1300cc BDA Configuration:
mid-engine Driver:
Mark Cole Class: Formula 1300 Date
taken: September 1977, Railway Straight, Croft
Originally built by Elden as an F100 car in
1972, the Sturgess was raced by Mark Cole, a Hotcar Magazine
editor, for most of the decade. Its chassis was designed by Peter Hampshier, and the bodywork by Tony
Hilder. During the 1972 season the car was converted to the 1300cc class, Group 7 specifications before being
raced in the newly formed F1300 formula. For 3 or 4 seasons the car was raced with a Panther-Ford pushrod engine giving out about
130bhp on two twin-choke 4ODCOE Webers. Wheels were Revolution’s 8 inch alloys at the front and 10 inch at the rear. One
set of Firestone YB24 Intermediates lasted all of 1972. Later improvements included a 1300cc BDA engine and proper racing
slicks but externally very little changed over the years.
