Alex Clacher was a heating engineer from Darlington, a few miles up the road from Croft. If you drive along the main road through Darlington on your way to Croft, his offices, A.G. Clacher, can still be seen. Alex held the 1000cc Special Saloon record for many circuits, which was no mean feat considering he built the car, tuned the engine, and raced in what was one of the most competitive classes in British motor racing at the time. Alex raced at most of the British and Irish Circuits, often getting a mention for his exploits in Gerry Marshall's 'From the Hot Seat' column in Car and Car Conversions Magazine
