The Avenger was not the first choice for the majority of Special Saloon constructors, which, on reflection, may have been short-sighted because the basic car had a more sophisticated rear suspension than the more popular Escort. As one of the first computer designed cars, this car had a light and strong body which enhanced the excellent handling provided by McPherson struts at the front, and the four-link, semi-trailing arm live axel at the rear. Ray Forbes' car took a familiar route to gain more power by replacing the original engine with a Ford Cosworth BDA racing engine.
