Daf
was a Dutch firm which was taken over by Volvo in 1975. One of the reason
for the take over was Daf's Variomatic transmission, an automatic, infinitesimally
stepped system using cones and belts instead of gears. This
unusual set-up allowed the designer and builder of the car, Ray
Kilminster, to mid-mount the engine and gearbox for best weight distribution, and
still keep within Special Saloon Regulations. At a mere 700 kg this car was originally
raced by Tony Hazelwood in 1973 and was then fitted with a 450bhp Oldsmobile
engine. Front and rear suspension was March Formula 2, located on front and rear
subframes, and 4-pot caliper disk brakes were used all round. It is seen here being raced by its
third owner, Alan Minshaw, the proprietor of the tuning firm, Demon Tweeks,
a firm still sponsoring racing cars.
