Peter Day Class:
Special Saloons up to 850cc (Hitachi) Date
taken: 1979? Mallory Park
Peter held the lap record at Mallory Park for the up to 850cc Special Saloons in his Mini; the remarkable thing about this car was it literally had half a Formula Atlantic BDA, Daytune engine – two cylinders only. It
had been discovered early in the 70s that BDA engine could be made to run and produce larger power output when cut in half. These engines were small, light and fit Minis perfectly. The Fiat 500 had a rear engine so the
whole of Peter’s Mini engine and gearbox could be relocated to the rear of the car’s spaceframe creating a mid-engined car. A lightweight Fiat 500 body topped the spaceframe to create a featherweight Super Saloon.
Early design for the car were produced late in 1977, the car taking to the track the following year. Its first race at Silverstone proved the car was reliable, it finished 6th, But two spins showed there was a lot of
work to be done setting up the suspension.
