Dave Bettison tried for over a year to get the Lotus Super 7 accepted into modified sports car racing. In its first year of acceptance, 1976, he narrowly beat Jon Fletcher (Lotus Elan) for the class title in the BARC Modified Sports Car Championships - the outright winner being John Cooper in a Porsche 911.
