Lotus Europa S1 Engine: Lotus twin-cam 1588cc Configuration:
mid-engine,
Driver:
Harry Appleby Class: Modified Sports Cars 1501 to 2000cc Date
taken: June 1976 at Main Straight, Croft
Modified Europas were a rarity and this car, in Team Lotus colours, made infrequent visits to
Croft. It was based on the earliest S1 version of the Europa which was originally fitted with a 1500cc Renault engine. The identifying
feature of the S1 was the two external buttresses running from the rear of the roof to the back of the car. Compare this to the
later flat deck of the S2 version. It is a testament to the design of the car how few aerodynamic
changes had to be made for racing.

Lotus Europa S2
Twin Cam
Engine:
Lotus twin-cam 1588cc Configuration: mid-engine Driver:
W. Winstanley Class:
Production Sports Cars Date
taken: October 1975
The Lotus Europa twin-cam Special shown here was unbeatable in production sports car racing once
the classes had been restructured to exclude supercars. Originally designed as a sports car for Europe, it had a mid-mounted
Renault engine and transaxle it never caught on in the same way as the Elan. When the engine was changed from Renault to a Lotus 1600cc twin-cam, the increased performance put it firmly in contention as a production sports car racer.

Eric gained much success with this car during the '81 season racing in GT classes that did not always favour his engine capacity. |
