Jon Fletcher was a mainstay of modified sports car racing throughout Britain, winning many races and championships. His achievements were not brought about by class wins only; he had the ability to take outright victory from more powerful machines in the higher capacity classes. This was a remarkable feat considering the bigger cars could outpace his Elan’s top speed of 145mph by some 35mph. The reasons for Jon’s, and other Elan drivers, success was the amazing stopping and cornering ability of these cars compared to the heavier ‘big bangers’ The car and engine were self prepared, Jon also assisting other drivers in the design and preparation of their Elans. The ‘Glazepta” Elan was an ex-works car which had be driven be Jackie Stewart in the late sixties. The top picture shows the car in 1976 trim, when Jon won the BRSCC Modsports championship and came second in class in the BARC Modified Sports Car Championships to Dave Bettinson driving a newly acceptedLotus Super 7. The lower picture shows Jon's Elan at Aintree in the early seventies. He won 7 Modsports championship during the decade: 1970 and 1971 - BARC (Yorkshire); 1972 - Chevron Oils; 1973 - Blue Circle; 1976 and 1977 - BRSCC and 1977 - Steel Tubes Services. The car is still owned by Jon and is currently being restored.

Lotus Elan
Engine: Lotus twin-cam 1588cc
Configuration: front-engine, rear-wheel drive
Driver:Andy Smith
Class: Modified Sports Cars 1501-2000cc
Date taken: 1976 at Croft
Andy rallied car during the early 70s, moving on to circuit racing with the ex-VRM Lotus Elan in 1976. He dominated the Northern and Scottish Modsports Championship during 1977 and 78, winning both outright during these two years. Andy's Lotus Elan and Kenny Allan's ex-John Blade’s Clan Crusader formed one of the best turned-out teams in any class of motor racing. With matching custom paintwork and extremely rapid cars they were a dominant force in the two smaller Modified Sports Car classes. Coincidently, John Blades later raced the Elan. He started racing a Mallock U2 MkI7B late 1977, winning his first clubman championship, 1978, BRSCC Northern, the following year. A new car for ’79, a Mallock U2 MkI8B, brought two more championships, the Northern and Scottish. During the 1980 season, Andy raced Two Mallocks: a Mk20 and a Mk21 with the same success as previous years, winning class ‘A’ in the Northern, outright in the Scottish and Tricentrol Championships. His Tally for that year was 35 wins, 30 fastest lap, 21 pole positions and 4 lap records: Aintree, 107.5mph (173.0kph); Croft, 97.5mph (156.9kph); Ingliston, 79.2mph (127.5kph) and Mallory Park, 109.3mph (175.8kph).
