The Gilby Sports car was based on the Terrier MkIII Formula Junior car. Designed by Len Terry and built in
1959 by Peter Ashcroft, it was first raced in 1960 by Keith Greene. Peter Arundell drove the car pictured here to victory in the 1960 Archie Scott-Brown Memorial Trophy at Snetterton; covering the 41 miles (66klms) at
an average speed of 70.2mph (113kph). Peter was immediately snapped up by Colin Chapman to drive for the fledgling Lotus Formula Junior team. The car regularly won races in the 60s, driven by a variety of people,
having a leaner time until Lionel bought it in 1976. By the end of the 70s, Lionel had won the French Historic Championship, coming 2nd in the Lurani Trophy and, ironically, winning at Spa Francorchamp in 1979 ahead of
Peter Greene who was managing Gordon Spice’s Capri team at the time. Over the years, the Gilby has had 6 owners and hundreds of wins; an unofficial club has grown up around the car with all of its ex-owners regularly
keeping in touch.
