Opel Kadett Coupe
Engine: Opel 1100cc
Configuration: front engined, rear-wheel drive
Driver: Martin Sledmore
Class: Special Saloons
Date taken: June 1976 at start, Croft
Martin had his first race in 1976, driving this 1100cc Opel Kadett at Rufforth. Later buying the Lotus Cortina MkII, featured elsewhere, and winning the 1978, over 2500cc class in the BARC Northern Special Saloon Championship. The Opel was not an obvious choice for Special Saloons, the Opel Kadett was too heavy and the engine too small to compete with the lightweight Minis and Imps which dominated the up to 1300cc class. The Kadett was the German version of Vauxhall's Firenza, both companies being owned by GM.
