Richard ‘Dickie’ Attwood started racing in 1960 in a Triumph TR3. From 1964 to 1969 he drove in Formula 1 for BRM, Lotus, Cooper & Brabham. During the years from 1960 to 1969 he had also driven GT cars and was
chosen to drive, along with Hans Herrmann, a Porsche 917 at Le Mans in 1970. They won outright in 1970 and came second in 1971. After a very successful year he retired at the end of the 1971 season. He came out of
retirement briefly during the 80s, driving the Porsche 917 in the Phoenix Supersports Trophy race at the Dublin Circuit (pictured above), and taking part in the 1984 Le Mans with an Aston Martin Nimrod. He still has the
occasional out in historic events such as the Festival of Speed.
