Tony
Sugden was a regular racer at Croft in this Escort. He was competing in the 1977
Troy Tires and Auto Centre (a mixture of US and UK
spellings) Championship when this picture was taken. This car was built in 1969
and won 32 of the 42 races entered. Originally, built with an 1840cc BDE engine
and 5-speed ZF gearbox; this car was fairly standard compared to others. The
body was steel apart for the fibreglass front end, doors, boot and flared
arches. At the front was a standard, up-rated, McPhearson strut arrangement with
4-pot ventilated disc. An atlas axel, leaf springs and telescopic shock
absorbers supplied the rear drive and suspension. All the suspension, front and rear, was fully rose jointed. 10 and 12 inch (25.4 and 30cms) wide
Minilite wheels were used front and rear. A year after this photo he was racing a Chevron B23 in
libre events, and a Volvo in production saloons, racing both in the 1978 Battle
of Britain Meeting at Croft. Over the years Tony has won more than 650 races but
is talking of retiring at the end of the 2003 season. What did he choose to race in the 21st
century? the 1993cc silhouette Skoda S130RS, below, just like the seventies. Tony won his class, in the BRDC Easter, Esso Uniflow Championship race, beating
Mike Newmans' Firenza into second place.
