Keith, driving the Mk I Escort, 4700cc Escort (on previous page) was one of the main competitors in the over 2500cc, Special Saloon class throughout the early 70s. Before this he raced a lightweight Escort MkI with a 1760cc twin-cam engine, gaining 9 places and 4 fasted laps from its 14 races.
Following the demise of the MkI escort in 1977, Keith built this new car for the 1978 season, retaining his 4700cc engine but putting it into an Escort MkII body. It was a development of the earlier car and the photo shows the used of aluminium over fiberglass for the very wide arches, back and front. The eagle-eyed may noticed the one-piece front end is in fact from a MkI Escort. This picture was taken at the Battle of Britain meeting, Monday the 28th of August 1978, and the car next to Keith’s is the Jaguar engine Escort (92) of Phil Barak, and in the background is John Sledmore’s, purple and black, 3500cc V8 Escort.
