Ford Escort MkI Engine: Jaguar 3900cc Straight 6
Configuration:
front-engine, rear-wheel drive
Driver: Phil Barak Class:
Special Saloons over 2500 and Super Saloons Date
taken: 1977, Railway Straight, Croft
Phil took the unusual route of installing a big Jaguar engine in his car instead of a V8. During the early 70’s Mick Hill had some success with a Jaguar engined Anglia, and it may have been no coincidence
that Phil was racing against another Newcastle-upon-Tyne resident, David Holmes, who also drove a Jaguar engined Anglia. Phil started racing in 1956 with a Cooper Formula 3 car, continuing until 1960. Then he raced Lotus
11s and 17s for two year in GT championships. For the 1962 season he modified a Cooper Monaco by fitting a 3000cc Ferrari engine, gaining lap records at Charter Hall and Rufforth. Phil took a break from racing until
1970 when he competed in Formula Ford driving a Hawke DL2A,and Peter’s Stores Special. For the 1974 season he acquired the
Brabham BT35 and raced this in Monoposto and Libre events. During 1977/8 he drove the 3900cc
Jaguar engined Escort (above) before taking two years off. He returned with a 5000cc Escort, which, despite a late start to the season, he took a class win in the BRSCC Northern Special Saloons Championship. He is now an
official of Silverstone Circuit and still races (2003). His 2003 car is a very rapid,
2000cc Lotus Elan, which he used to contest the Europa Engineering Sports Saloon Championship.
