This is the Ex-Trevor Cook, Mike Scott car raced throughout the 70 by them. Terry has provided an excellent history of the car which is reproduced below.
I purchased this car fromMIKE SCOTT
in1982, telling the wife I was going to buy her a little run around. Mike bought the car in 1974 from
TREVOR COOK
with a 1000cc MAE screamer on board. (So the
story goes, this car was actually Trevor’s wife’s car but was commandeered after his racecar was crashed while leading the championship. Frantic work changing over the parts from one car to the other enabled him to
carry on racing, much to his wife’s disgust. Over the following years Mike tried various engine combinations ranging from 1000cc MAE, 1000cc SCA, 1600cc BDA all with various amounts of success, with over 50 class and
outright wins, and numerous championships. He was leading the championship at Lydden in 1980 when the engine blew forcing him to retire. The body was slowly modified over the years from all steel to a lightened body
with the usual fibreglass front, door panels, boot lid, and a pair of specially made rear wings and roof panel. The car was tested against 2 other racing Anglias, the Minton brothers 1860 BDA, and Gary Charlewoods, ex
Mick Hill, J'anglia, by Nick Whiting for Cars and Car Conversion. The car as I bought it came as a rolling chassis with rocket gearbox, I later found out that this box was a special built for Fords by Hewland, all
the bearings being much larger etc, so it could take lots of bhp. The front and rear fully adjustable suspension came from the Mann brothers crashed Anglia, the all black Snowglow, which funnily enough I raced against
in the 70s. I had decided right from the start that I didn’t want to drive so asked Mike to drive for me and I would look after the car. I purchased a 2000cc BDG fuel injected engine that at first gave us all sorts of
problems, mainly overheating. In the end we reverted to a 1600cc thick wall block from South Africa, boring it out till we ended up with 1860cc we were actually quicker with the 1860 than the 2000 on most of the
circuits. We were offered a fully floating axle, ex Broadspeed GP2 Escort, by Dale Minton when they changed over to a ZF type in their Escort, which we snapped up and installed complete with rear disc brakes, and watts
linkage. And that’s how we ran the old girl, with the odd modification or two until we retired in 1992. Along the way we had several class wins, class championship, a few accidents (1- writing of my Broadspeed axle, I
was not happy that day), upset lots of people by beating them and thoroughly enjoyed the racing and made lots of friends. During this time not only was I preparing the car, I was also the press officer for the Special
Saloon Register. Is this the oldest racing Anglia still about? And now I've come full circle because I’m stripping down the old girl prior to rebuilding so my son can have a go, who knows I might even drive it my self
on a track day.
