Tim Wood's association with Clubman racing went back at least to 1973 when he drove a renamed Mallock as a Pennine U2 for the Pennine Motor Group. In '74 he raced a Magnum C74A, which was followed the next year by the Magnum C75A (shown Above) Believed to be another one-off, this car had a slightly rounded cross section compared to other designs. It is evident how low to the ground the spaceframe chassis is, if you look above the racing numbers to see the intake trumpets for the two, twin choke Weber carburettors of the Holbay prepared motor. (see diagram of car) Tim Woods and the Magnum were a dominant force in class 'A' races until he moved on to single seaters in 1976. During 1976, and subsequent years, a Magnum C75A was raced by Reg Forrester-Smith, and may have been the same car. A Magnum C79 appeared in 1979 . The similarity between the Gryphon's designation C74A and The Magnum's C74/75/79A is easy to understand: in both cases, the 'C' stands for clubman, the number is the year of manufacture and the 'A' is for class 'A'. Tim went on to drive a Brabham BT35 for National Breakdown in Libre events.
Footnote: I have been informed (Aug '03) that a Magnum clubman car is being re-built and the owner is looking for the history of this marque, if anyone have information could they contact me at the email address on the contacts page.
