Eddie was a late starter to motor racing, having his first race in this Ginetta at the age of 31. Initially he sprinted an MGB before starting his long racing career. He is still racing in such classic events as the Le Mans Classic races, in his Austin Healey 3000, and the Berkett relay races as part of the Ginetta team. The G4 pictured here was the last R (for racing) car to be made and was ordered by a Lotus dealer, who stipulated an Elan diff instead of the usual, cut-down Austin unit. This change necessitated a unique rear suspension using the front uprights and constant velocity joints from the front-wheel drive Triumph 1300. Jim Adamson raced the car for a few years in the up to 1150cc class, but with the advent of the Imp powered Davrians and Clans it became uncompetitive. When Eddie acquired it, the troublesome 997cc, F3 engine was replaced by a home-tuned, 1500cc Corsair GT unit brought from a scrap yard. The car became competitive again in its new class, with its main rivals being the heavier Midgets, Sprites and Spitfires. This ‘scrapper’ engine lasted three races before blowing up in a big way at Croft’s chicane, scattering oil and large pieces of metal all over the track. The replacement engine featured stronger rods and pistons but retained the standard crankshaft. The G4 is presently being fully rebuilt by Eddie, the chassis having succumbed to the ravages of rust and encounters with Croft's notorious chicane above.
