MG was a one of BMC's success stories. To capitalize on this success they 'badge' engineered a range of small cars under the MG name. The best selling Frogeye Sprite was redesigned and sold as an Austin Healey Sprite and MG Midget. There was no difference between cars except for some trim and the badges. Shown here is a well-prepared example of full race car. The 1275cc engine has been bored to the maximum size to comply with the upper limit of the class. Boring the block to 1420cc required the use of Triumph pistons, ironic considering the rivalry between Midgets and Spitfires. A full race engine of this capacity, when combined with a singe Weber carburettor, would have put out about 105bhp at the rear wheels, and rev to 8000rpm. Spridgets, as Sprites and Midgets were collectively known, were a popular choice because they were relatively cheap to build and parts were readily available. Paul later went on to race an 1850cc BDE, Escort Special Saloon

This photo was taken at the first race of the 1978 seasons, and the weather was very wet. Entries were poor with three cars only listed on the programme for this Richard Sutherland Trophy and Northern Modsports Championship, Steven being alone in the up to 1500cc class.
